Often [like 90% of the time] for fashion and lifestyle photo sessions, I shoot on location.
For the geisha shoot with Isis, we decided for a more ‘studio’ like atmosphere and luckily my friends were willing to loan me their hairsalon space on a day when they were closed. The super high ceilings, off white walls and interesting glass mosaic walls made for great, convenient backdrops for this shoot where the focus was on the styling and make-up. We were going for a beauty shoot look and I think we achieved it.
My friend and uber-assistant Aaron captured these ‘behind-the-scenes’ images to highlight me working a fashion shoot and to show that you don’t always need to ‘perfect’ studio space to accomplish your photographic goals. Sure having a studio is great, but if you don’t like me, this was the perfect option – plus my friends let me use the space for free [now that you gotta love...] ;^)
On a side note… I like to shoot light, meaning I have portable, lightweight lighting for most of my shoots. Usually its a single light set-up, augmented by natural ambient light and sometimes a reflector. The set-up for this shoot included a shoot-through umbrella fitted to my lightstand and a Canon 580ex speedlight triggered by Radio Poppers. Easy peasy, super portable and relatively $$ efficient considering how expensive and cumbersome studio lighting can be.
