Key Shifting…

Ahhhh… tomorrow night can’t come soon enough! Tomorrow’s class is THE class I’ve been waiting all semester for.  Shooting with OCF [off-camera-flash] and strobes outdoors to ‘key shift’ the ambient light from the outdoor environment and light my subject with strobes. Yummy yummy photographic goodness.  My instructor says once we master this, our photography will never be the same.

Personally,  I CAN NOT WAIT!! I love the look of OCF and the impact it makes to a photograph. It can be super dramatic or very natural. It’s all in how the lighting is used and placed on location. Annie Liebovitz has made this technique famous… It’s been used for years by other photographers, but she has really made it a hallmark of her photographic style.

Examples of Key Shifting are all by Annie Liebovitz:

I’m certainly no where near, even in my most deluded dreams, an Annie Liebovitz. Not now and probably not in 20 years… Her creative vision and pushing of the creative envelope is unparalleled. I simply hope to grasp the concept of key shifting to improve my photographic skills and bring some new, creative options to the table.

Environmental Portrait…

Class was a challenge tonight. We were learning about balancing ambient environment light with strobes. Can you say ‘complicated’?!? Uh yeah… it was complicated, but eventually I think we got it.

My instructor switched up our groups for the remainder of the classes and now I’m working with two girlies. It was fun… For tonight’s assignment, we each had to select a location, inside, in the campus buildings, different from each other and shoot our key shifted photos in our selected location.

I chose a cool, edgy location of lockers with graffiti-type art on them. But it was a challenge due to the narrow hallway and close quarters. Overall I think we got what we needed out of it, but it was a challenge to say the least. Here are some of my favorites from the night:

Lucky is one lucky dog…

This cute family is home to Lucky, the Sheltie puppy-dog.

Lucky’s two-legged mom is daughter to a very nice lady I know from work and last weekend I happily met her [Nikki] and her husband at the park to take family portrait. Apparently Lucky is spoiled rotten by his ‘grandma’ Aida and is doted on by the entire family, so at the request of Grandma, I took some family photos suitable for hanging or displaying in the living room. LOL! Apparently Lucky’s grandma doesn’t think the family snapshots are good enough for her boy and professional photos were most definitely in order =) On another note: I have to say that considering he’s only a year old, this adorable dog was very well behaved – training is obviously a big part of his development.

Anyways, I promised the family a sneak peek at their handsome boy, and here it is… enjoy!

studio time…

Now that I’ve passed my ‘Pack Test’ – basically a test from my instructor at Langara that ensures I know how to set-up a power pack and strobes, withOUT blowing myself up, I can now use the school studio and lighting for practice on Sundays! Yay!

So… since I was in for my pack test this past Sunday and Tiffany was interested in shooting with me and Aaron again, I brought her along for the morning and early afternoon. Tiffany also invited another model-friend, Justina, to join us. We had a fun time and I now make this mental note to self: REMEMBER THE IPOD CABLE!!!

In the meantime… here are the best of the morning studio session. Enjoy!

Tiffany and the Sheep…

So tonight we had our studio lighting with PEOPLE shoot. It was an absolute blast! My group consists of Jeff, Aaron and myself and we each brought our ideas, props and enthusiasm to the shoot tonight.

Our sweet, quirky and super cute model for the evening was Tiffany. She was great! Willing to try just about anything… including gnawing on a bleached out bone [don't ask!] and going for a whole Wilma Flintstone look LOL. She was easy to photograph, interacted really well with her and she is a thoroughly delightful girl.

Here are some of my favorites from the 100+ images shot tonight. Enjoy!
